Obituary of Samuel R. Harris
Samuel R. Harris, age 92, of Kincaid, Kansas, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015, at the Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola, Kansas.
He was born February 6, 1923, at Geneva, Kansas, the son of Stanley and Marie (Smith) Harris. At age two, the family moved to the Diamond neighborhood north of LaHarpe, Kansas. He graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1940 and Iola Junior College in 1943. He entered the military service in July 1943. Sam served 22 months in Europe with the Combat Engineers. After his discharge in January 1946, he attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1949.
On June 13, 1948, he married Evelyn Trine Bohm of Iola. They moved to Kincaid in 1949 and he taught Vocational Agriculture and was the FFA Advisor in the high school for 18 years. He also taught and was the FFA Advisor in the Garnett High School for 19 years, retiring in 1986.
Sam was a member of the Kincaid Methodist Church and the Kincaid V.F.W., and a charter member of the Lions Club. He was a farmer.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Upshaw; and brother, Wayne Harris.
Sam is survived by his wife, Evelyn Harris of the home; two daughters, Sandra Herynk and husband Steve of Adel, Iowa; Jo Helen Sprague and husband Lonnie of Kincaid, Kansas; one brother, Howard Harris of Bryan, Texas; sister, Margaret Thomas of Neosho, Missouri; four grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Perkins and husband Mike of Adel, Iowa; Jeri Lynn Gardner and husband Josh of Overland Park, Kansas; Joe Sprague and wife Nikki of Kincaid, Kansas; Justin Sprague and wife Jenna of Andover, Kansas; seven great grandchildren, Meg and Olivia Perkins; Dawson and Emma Gardner; Julianna and Shelby Sprague; and Sam Sprague.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church in Kincaid, Kansas. Burial following in the Kincaid Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kincaid High School Community Center, Kincaid Fair Association, or to the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church.
