Obituary of Clyde Merrill
Clyde Merrill, age 87, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2008, at his home.
Lester Clyde Merrill was born on May 21, 1920, at Centerville, Kansas, the son of Ray Morris Merrill and Orpha Izora (Payne) Merrill. He attended the Eureka grade school and Parker Rural High School. Following school Clyde worked on farms in Iowa and Colorado. Clyde served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946; during WWII he served in the Pacific Theatre. On August 18, 1944, he married Helen Page in Parker, Kansas. Clyde farmed near Parker from 1946 to 1948 when they moved to Garnett, where he was a farmer and stockman until 2000.
Clyde attended the First United Methodist Church of Garnett. He was a life member of VFW Post #6397, where he was past President and had served on the Honor Guard for many years. He also belonged to the Ottawa Horseshoe Association, and he enjoyed all sports.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Clayton Merrill in 1947; his parents; three brothers, Robert, Roy, and Ralph Merrill; and one sister, Ruth Gibson.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Helen Merrill, of the home; his son, Gail Merrill and wife Debora of Kansas City, Missouri; his daughter, Linda Whittle and husband James of Las Vegas, Nevada; one brother, Glenn Merrill and wife Betty of Salina, Kansas; and two step grandchildren.
