Obituary of Dean A. Register

Dean Arthur Register, age 76, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas. He was born on June 29, 1937, in Gardner, Kansas, the son of Preston and Lela (Day) Register. He rode a horse to attend a one room grade school in Gardner, Kansas. His family moved to Lane, Kansas, in 1949, and he graduated from Lane High School in 1955. Dean attended Emporia University and Ottawa University in one year. On August 15, 1956, Dean was united in marriage to Karen Ellis at Butler, Missouri. This marriage was blessed with four children, Neil, Ken, Rhonda, and Todd. Following their marriage they moved to California where Dean worked in Covina, California at Sawyer's Furniture Store for one year. They then returned to Kansas to operate a cattle hauling business. He was then hired at Taylor Forge in Paola, Kansas in 1959, working there for 25 years, retiring in 1983 as a supervisor. Upon retirement, Dean ventured into cattle buying and hauling, horse trading, farming, cattleman and oil business. He was a lifelong farmer and cattleman. Dean was a dedicated member of the Lane Fair Board, serving as President for many years. Dean and Karen were Grand Marshals of the Lane Fair in 2006. Dean was civic minded and served as an Anderson County Commissioner for 12 years from 1999 to 2011. He continued to serve on many boards, including the Anderson County Democratic Committee; Meals on Wheels, Solid Waste and RC&D committees. Dean was a member of the Lane United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling to their lake house at Table Rock Lake, Missouri; collecting antique butter churns and western memorabilia; gardening, playing cards, and helping others. One of his greatest joys was watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and especially attending their sporting events which he rarely missed a game. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; brother Freddie Register in 1932; and his son, Neil Dean Register on August 1, 1984. He is survived by his wife, Karen Register; daughter-in-law, Elaine Bones and children, Joshua Register, Jess Register, wife, Jennifer and children Caden and Jamon Register, Jalissa Kueser, husband Danny and children, MaKayla, Damone and Preston Kueser; son, Ken Register, wife, Kristine and daughter, Tess Shoemaker and Steven Crouch and their children Cannon and Sutton Crouch; daughter, Rhonda Rockers, husband, Jake their children, Timothy Rockers, wife, Ashley and their son Mason Rockers, Amanda Rockers and Mark Mader; son, Todd Register and daughter, Sarah Register; step grandsons Jonathon Wishon, Logan Hughes, Star Carter and Jayden Osborn; step granddaughters, Nicole and Leeza Saunders. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Lane Cemetery, Lane Kansas. The family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lane Fair Association or Lane United Methodist Church and left in care of the funeral home.
