Obituary of Loyd Albert Peters
Loyd Albert Peters, age 87, of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at his home.
He was born on December 29, 1921, in Anderson County, Kansas, the son of Maurice and Ida (Benjamin) Peters. Loyd graduated from the Garnett High School with the Class of 1940, enlisting in the U.S. Navy on May 6, 1941 serving for six years. He served on the USS Dunlap from February 10, 1942, until it was decommissioned on December 14, 1945, then he transferred to the USS New Jersey in January 19, 1946. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy on April 28, 1952.
Loyd married Frieda Miller on May 28, 1949 at Garnett, Kansas. His jobs included the Little Bear Oil Company in Parsons, Kansas, Peters Drilling Company, Curtis Breeding. They moved to Richmond, Kansas in 1959. He then worked for Farmer's Coop for 18 years, retiring in 1983. After retirement, he worked for Great Plains Coin Shop.
Loyd was the announcer at the Richmond Fair for many years, serving as Past President for many years. Loyd and Frieda were the Grand Marshalls of the Richmond Fair in 1993. He was past President of Chamber of Commerce, past Grand Knight for Knights of Columbus Garnett Council 1368, served in the St. Therese Church Council, serving on the Regional Council for the Catholic Church, past president of Community Building Board, VFW Life Member, Post Commander of VFW in 2007 and 2008, Honor Guard with VFW Post #6397. In his spare time, Loyd ran the clock, the scoreboard and announced for the football and basketball games for Central Heights through the years. He helped organize and coach the girls' softball in Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Ida Peters; one son, Maurice Peters in 1996; one grandson, Jimmy Peters; five brothers, Ellsworth, Ralph, Floyd, Wayne, and Maurice; and one sister, Maxine Peine.
Loyd is survived by his wife Frieda Peters, of the home; three sons, Dennis Peters and wife Sarah of Richmond, Kansas; Earl Peters and wife Sally of Marion, Kansas; Alvin Peters and wife Gayle of Garnett, Kansas; four daughters, Linda Peters of Saudia Arabia; Mary Peters of Independence, Missouri; Diane Peters and Karen Peters, both of Cassville, Missouri; one brother, James Peters of Denver, Colorado; five grandchildren, Paul Peters and wife Tara; Mikael Peters, Pam Peters, Brian Peters, and Kim Peters; two step granddaughters, Jane Bolte and Bev House; five step grandsons and three step great grandsons.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at St. Therese Catholic Church at Richmond, Kansas, burial to follow at the Holy Angels Cemetery, Garnett. A Rosary will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, you may leave memorial contributions to the Loyd Peters Memorial Fund.
