Obituary of Donald D. Prather

Donald Dean Prather, age 66, of Richmond, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2011, at the Osage Nursing Center in Osage City, Kansas. Don was born on August 11, 1945, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Evelyn (Goeldner) Prather. The family moved to Kansas in 1950, and Don attended school in Richmond, graduating in 1963. Don's class was the last class to graduate from Richmond High School. He studied psychology at Emporia University, graduating in 1967. Don was united in marriage to Carol E. McCurdy on September 9, 1972, in Richmond, Kansas. Don went to work at the Topeka Police Garage in 1967, working there until the spring of 1979. Following this, he moved to Richmond to raise cattle and farm until he retired in 2000. He was an avid enthusiast of antique engines, and was a member of the Meriden Antique Engine Show. They traveled to many steam and antique engine shows. Don loved working on old engines. He also collected rocks and arrowheads. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Prather; mother, Evelyn Kuiken; and stepfather Melvin Kuiken. Don is survived by his wife, Carol Prather, of the home; two half-sisters, Barbara Foubert of North English, Iowa; Patricia Foubert of Florissant, Missouri; one step aunt Gertha Kuiken McCrea of Ottawa, Kansas; three nephews; three nieces; three great nephews; two great nieces; one great great niece; five step cousins. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Don's family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richmond Museum.
