Obituary of Margery M. Hunt

Margery Hunt, age 88, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Parkview Heights in Garnett, Kansas.

 

Margery May (Ewbank) Hunt was born June 3, 1930, in Baldwin City, Kansas, the eldest of eight children born to Oliver Freeman and Leone (Barner) Ewbank.

 

Margery's school began at Cherry Mound School finishing 1st grade at Cedar Point rural school; 2nd and part of 3rd grade were spent at Longfellow Elementary in Garnett. A move to Olivet meant she finished 3rd and 4th grade there with Miss Bodine as her teacher. Beginning the 5th grade at Cherry Mound in 1939, and then finishing her education at Irving Elementary and Garnett High School with the Class of 1948. She attended KU for one year then summer school at Ottawa University and Iola.

 

During high school years, summers were spent working for the Hudson River Dayline at Indian Point Park near Peekskill, New York. Her first job was washing dishes at Earl Johnson's Café. She also clerked at the Coker's Store.

 

She taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Maple Grove for two years and Cedar Ridge. After teaching, she was employed by the Anderson County Hospital as a CNA retiring in 1992.

 

Margery was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garnett since 1944; a member of UMW, being a District Officer for four years; ARC and taught children's Sunday school classes for 24 years, and in later years, adult classes. She was also a member of the Glenloch Willing Workers Quilting Club.

 

Her hobbies are people, dressing dolls, volunteering, music, sewing, quilting for family, and working jigsaw/crossword puzzles.

 

On Sunday, July 30, 1950, she married Clarence Turner Hunt. They became the parents of five children.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Hunt in 2003; two sisters, Lorna Carol in 1941 and Lorene Ann Roeckers in 1997; three brothers, Bruce Ewbank in 2003; Russell N. Ewbank in 2011; and John D. Ewbank in 2002.

 

Margery is survived by her children, Diana Joyce (Steven) Douglas of Topeka, Kansas; Jay Brent (Ga) Hunt of Boone, Iowa; Garen Earl (Mary) Hunt of Garnett, Kansas; Gayle Irene (Robin) Metobo of Kansas City, Kansas; Daniel Freeman Hunt of Topeka, Kansas; brother, James R. Ewbank (Norma) of Atchison, Kansas; sister, Mary Seward of Bellingham, Washington; ten grandchildren, Troy Hunt, Tara (Ryan) Wunderly, Aaron (Diane) Lizer, Allison (Joe) Ray, Andrew (Tammy) Lizer, Maurice (Erin) Washington, Jason Hunt, Kayleigh (Logan) Smith, Dalton and Dylan Hunt, and eleven great grandchildren, Hayden and Jace Wunderly, Orion, Owen and Damon Smith, Faith Mildfelt, Lucas and Natalie Lizer, Madison Ray, Will and Wade Washington, as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church, Garnett, with inurnment to follow in the Glenloch Cemetery, Glenloch. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
