Obituary of John Lee Montgomery
John L. Montgomery, age 79, of Chanute, Kansas, passed away May 7, 2018, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. John was born on January 9, 1939, in Chanute, Kansas, to Lee Montgomery and Vera Beck Montgomery.
John and Rosalynd Booth Montgomery were married in Chanute, Kansas, on May 10, 1959. Rosalynd preceded him in death on December 10, 2011.
John graduated from Erie High School, Erie, Kansas. John attended Kansas University on a football scholarship. John graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He taught school and coached at Erie High School, Erie, Kansas. John managed credit life insurance accounts in the Chicago area, he owned and operated a resort at Lake of the Ozarks, and he drove a school bus and did substitute teaching for many years in the Chanute School District.
John was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chanute; Cedar Lodge No. 103 AF&AM, Chanute; Mirza Shriners, Pittsburg, Kansas; and the Elks Lodge, Kewanee, Illinois, where he served as Exalted Ruler.
John is remembered for his wonderful stories, his wit, his sarcasm, his love of people, and his ability to never meet a stranger. He liked to watch sports, especially KU. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. John was very fond of the kids who rode his bus.
John is survived by his son, Doug Montgomery and wife, Rhonda, Excelsior Springs, Missouri; his daughter, Jill Bridges and husband, Tom, Kansas City, Kansas; his sister, Mary Lou Beck, Humboldt, Kansas; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and companion, JoAnn Moran, Chanute, Kansas.
John was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his daughter, Christina Montgomery; and his brother, Dean Montgomery.
A funeral service honoring John's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church, 202 South Lincoln Street, Chanute, Kansas. The family will greet friends immediately prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Neosho County Memorial Park Cemetery, Chanute, Kansas.
