Thank you to everyone from me & my entire family. The outpouring from dad's old classmates, friends, coworkers, past students and the people of the Chanute area in general has been heartfelt. While none of these gestures come to me as a surprise, they leave me with a warm and comfortable feeling in trying to cope with his passing. Again, thank you all. If you see this "Bear", it's probably been 50 years but I do remember you. I appreciate your condolences.

John (Mr. Montgomery) was my teacher in Jr. High..Doug and Jill won't remember this but I babysat for them a few times. I had lost track of John and his family for a time but got a call from him when he was driving the bus for Chanute. He was going to be here in Pittsburg and I met him for coffee. Janice Stahl was going to join us but was out of town that day. I learned that John worked with Char Golay (another old friend) and I imagine that's how he found me. He was a good man and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I know he will be greatly missed.

Doug. my condolences to you and the family. Your father was a friend and coach in junior high when we went 10-0 in basketball at Erie. When I was a senior we won the CNC Conference going 15-1. He helped lay the foundation for that. We got beat by Humboldt (after beating them in Humboldt in the districts -1970-) in Chanute in the regional finals to prevent us from going to the state tournament. I was at that house on the west edge of Erie when you were maybe too young to remember - "Bear". I have fond memories of your mother as well. Later, my parents, Roger and Leah Kensinger, who owned The Erie Record for 50 years, had their horses in that pasture, and I spent some time out there at that barn. I am disappointed in myself that I didn't communicate with your Dad over the years. We liked each other and had a certain bond. He was a good man. Best of luck yo you and your family.

I knew John as a bus driver for Chanute Public Schools. As a teacher, I would always request John as my bus driver. He got you to the destination safe and sound, but more importantly he was fun to be with and great with kids. He always had a smile on his face and told jokes or funny stories. He treated the kids on his bus like family and took a special interest in all the sporting events he drove the kids to. He kept track of how they did in their games or events.
He was a special person and will be missed.

Oh John, I will miss your smile! You were such a joy to visit with. My prayers for your family for peace and comfort. I wish I could come to your service, but I’m graduating and getting my MLT pin. You were so encouraging about school and loved to hear where I was at in my studies. You will be missed. You were a great man in my eyes and many others as well. I loved to listen to you talk about your time at KU and playing cards. Rest In Peace.
