Obituary of Solomon A Evans

Solomon Aaron (Sol) Evans, age 84, of Yates Center, Kansas, passed away on March 4, 2018, at Windsor Place, Iola, Kansas. Sol was born on April 11, 1933, in Park Hill, Oklahoma, to Carmon N. Evans and Ora F. Hensley Evans. Sol was married to Barbara George in 1958 and they later divorced. He married Leinetta Ferree on June 26, 1988, in Yates Center, Kansas. Sol graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Master of Science degree in 1964. Sol taught at Cherryvale High School for three years, Iola High School for three years, and Allen County Community College for 34 years. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity for men in education. Sol served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1961, and was honorably discharged January 12, 1961. He was very involved in Lions Club activities, holding several offices at the local club level. He served as Lions District Governor from 1986-1987. He taught Sunday school for many years. Sol served on the Iola City Commission. When he moved to Yates Center, Sol served on the Yates Center City Council. Sol and Doug Womack were the founding members of the Crossroads of Mid-America Auto Club. They prepared and wrote the by-laws for the club. One of his great loves was old-time southern mountain music. He loved to play this music, although not always well, on the banjo, mountain dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, auto-harp, and mandolin. Sol is survived by his wife, Leinie, of the home; his son, Jon Evans and wife, Lori, of Moran, Kansas; his brother, Ed Evans and wife, Patsy, of El Paso, Arkansas; six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Sol was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Evans; and a sister, Norma Collier. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2018, at the Yates Center United Methodist Church, Yates Center, Kansas. Memorials are suggested to the Lions Club of Yates Center, Kansas, and may be left in care of the funeral home. Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola is in charge of arrangements.
