Richard Eugene Culbertson, 69 of Iola passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at his home. He was born April 27, 1947 in Gas, Kansas to Lester and Julia (Hunsaker) Culbertson. He grew up in California, and worked there for several years as a route salesman. After moving to Kansas, he worked for many years as a custodian for USD 257, where he enjoyed being around the schoolchildren, encouraging them to share his love of reading. He loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Sue, his parents and a sister Phyllis Hutchins. Richard is survived by his children Joelle Shallah and husband Sam of Iola, Richard Culbertson, Jr. of Red Bluff, California, and Matthew Culbertson and wife Shelly of Chanute; grandchildren Brittany Jensen and husband Dakota, Sam Shallah, Ryan Chapman and wife Brandi, Zachery Culbertson and Ashton Culbertson; great grandchildren Adyson Shallah, Piper Jensen, Cash Jensen, Zoey Jensen, Coral Jensen, Timberlyn Chapman; sister in law Pat Baker; and several nieces. A funeral service for Richard will be Monday, April 10, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola, with visitation Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. also at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Highland Cemetery at Iola. Contributions in his memory are suggested to the McKinley Elementary School Library Fund.
