Obituary of Robert L. Lane
Robert L. Lane, 96, of Iola, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016, at Windsor Place in Iola.
Robert Lorraine Lane was born September 23, 1919, the second oldest child to Homer G. Lane and Eureka L. Smith in Iola, Kansas. He was a lifelong member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. church, Iola, Kansas, and was active in a variety of church activities, from serving in the Sunday school, to being a member of the Trustee Board.
Robert served his nation during World War II as a First Sergeant with Company B 837th Engineer Aviation Battalion. Robert's first duties as a military man, along with his unit were to build runways in Greenville, S.C., Italy and Germany and these runways are still in use today. He is also a 50 year member of the Golden Square Lodge #71 and past District Deputy Grand Master over the Third District, Prince Hall Master Masons of Kansas.
Robert's many joys of his life were his wife Marybelle, son, Stephen (Yvonne), grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Sheldon (Claudia), Colby, Jason and his namesake Robert. Along with spending time with family and friends, Robert could always be found with a fishing pole on a pond bank telling many stories, in his garden harvesting a variety of vegetables, watching a baseball game or chatting with a neighbor.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2016, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Ward Chapel AME Church in Iola.
