Obituary of Alice Tholen

Alice F. Tholen, 86, of rural Moran, Kansas, passed away Thursday, January 21, 2016, at her home. Alice was born February 22, 1929, at Olmitz, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph and Frances (Riedl) Bahr. She grew up in Olmitz and graduated from St. Anne''s High School there. On June 22, 1948, Alice married Paul H. Tholen at St. Anne''s Catholic Church in Olmitz. They made their home on a farm near Oakley for a year before moving to their farm 4 miles northeast of Moran. Besides helping on the farm, Alice worked for the Allen County Hospital for 10 years and at Gates Rubber Company for 18 years before she retired. Mr. Tholen preceded her in death December 14, 2010. She was a member of St. John''s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Iola, and the American Legion Auxiliary at Moran. Survivors include her 6 children: Rick Tholen and wife, Peggy of Garnett, KS, Jim Tholen and wife, Vickie of Iola, KS, Carol Perkins and husband, Mel of Parsons, KS, Gary Tholen and wife, Karen of Edmond, OK, Paula Nipper and husband, Danny of Emporia, KS and Robert Tholen and wife, Julie of Moran, KS; 1 sister, Philomena Bahr of Wichita, KS; 21 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant twin son John Paul Tholen, and brothers Leonard and Bernard Bahr. Abiding by her wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Kansas for research. A memorial visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at St. John''s Parish Hall in Iola. The parish rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, followed by the memorial mass at 10:30 a.m. both at St. John''s Catholic Church in Iola. Memorials are suggested to EWTN or Center of Hope and may be left with the Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
