Obituary of H.W. Pannell
Harold Wesley "Hal" Pannell, 84, of Iola, Kansas, died Sunday, January 25, 2009, at his home.
Hal was born April 30, 1924, at Joplin, Missouri, to John Benson and Nellie (Goodrich) Pannell. He grew up in the Joplin area, attended MU and completed his master's degree at Pittsburg State.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, where he was a tail gunner on a B-17 that was shot down over Germany. He was a prisoner of war.
On March 18, 1950, Hal married Joanne Campbell in Bentonville, Arkansas. They made their home in various communities before moving to Iola in 1969, where he taught English and history at Iola High School. Mrs. Pannell died March 30, 1995.

3 Sons: Dr. Brian Pannell & wife, Jill of Leawood, Kansas; Kirk Pannell & wife, Sandy of Ft. Worth, Texas; and Dave Pannell & wife, Debbie of Paola, Kansas.
5 Grandchildren: Tyler, Allie, Ben, Brooke & John Pannell.
Long-Time Companion: Louise Hedman of Iola, Kansas
1 Sister: Lorene Johnson of Carthage, Missouri
He was preceded in death by a son, Martin J. Pannell; brother, John Pannell; and sister, Jenelle McCoy.
SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola.
INTERMENT: Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas
