Obituary of Coletta Sprague
Coletta Sprague, age 79, of Lone Elm, Kansas passed away December 25, 2009 at the Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, Kansas.
She was born June 25, 1930 at Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Thomas E. and Anna E. (Haffey) O'Mara. Coletta grew up in Colony graduating from high school there in 1948. She then earned her teaching certificate from the Emporia State Teachers College. She taught school for a few years in a country school near Colony and at Lone Elm. On October 9, 1951 she married Vernon Sprague at Kincaid, Kansas. This union was blessed with four daughters. Coletta was a homemaker; she also did some substitute teaching after her children went to school. Coletta was a member of the Advancers Club and the South Lone Elm "15" Club. She was very active in 4-H serving as a sewing project leader for many years. Coletta also volunteered at the Kincaid Fair for over 40 years, serving many of those as a 4-H Assistant Superintendent. She was an accomplished seamstress, making all of her daughter's wedding dresses. She taught all of her daughter's and many girls from the neighborhood how to sew. Coletta enjoyed bowling, square dancing, gardening and canning, and watching KU basketball, but one of her greatest joys was her grandchildren, and bragging about her grandchildren.
Coletta was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Carol McGhee in 1993; a brother, Tom O'Mara; and a sister, Valetta Stanley.
She is survived by her husband Vernon of the home; three daughters, Marilyn Thexton and husband, Harold, of Colony, Sandra Adams and husband, Tom, of Kincaid, and Diane Calahan and husband, Darrel, of Colony; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren (and expecting two more); brother, John O'Mara and wife, Kay, of Iola, Kansas; and sister, Aretta Nowlin of Fort Worth, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Colony Cemetery, Colony, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Garnett. Memorial contributions may be given to the Lone Elm Ladies Fund.
