Obituary of Andrew "Andy" B. Yoder

Andy B. Yoder, age 56, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on February 7, 2016. Andrew B. Yoder was born on February 7, 1960, at Garnett, Kansas. He was the fourth of seven children born to Benedict E. Yoder Sr. and Elizabeth (Miller) Yoder. He grew up in the Amish community west of Garnett, graduating from school at Mont Ida, Kansas. Andy began working as a carpenter when he was 18 years old. Andy moved to Arthur, Illinois, where he met his future wife, Lucy Gingerich. They were married at Arcola, Illinois on April 7, 1982. They soon after moved back to Garnett, Kansas. Andy was glad to leave behind too many people and return to an area with the fishing he loved. Andy worked as a carpenter for John Hostetler for a few years before he and his brothers, Marvin, Nelson, and Ben, began working together on their own, forming Yoder Construction. Andy was well known throughout the area as the friendly carpenter on the light green tractor with the white trailer. He and his brothers built many new homes around Garnett, Andy particularly enjoyed the numerous remodel projects they worked on. He loved the challenge of making something old look new again. Andy and Lucy were blessed with three children, Rebecca, Philip, and Julie. He was quick to help a family member or neighbor. Andy never met a stranger and if you saw him in town you could be assured of a smile or a wave and a nice conversation. He loved fishing and the opportunity to share his catch with his neighbors at a fish fry. He will be remembered for his easy going nature, especially his gift of being able to forgive easily. His greatest joy was his family and grandchildren. Andy was preceded in death by one brother, Leslie Yoder on January 25, 2011. Andy is survived by his wife Lucy and his children, Rebecca Miller and husband, Gene, Philip, and Julie Keim and husband, Aaron; three grandchildren, Dawson, Tristan and Reuben Miller, all of Garnett. He is also survived by his parents, Benedict and Elizabeth Yoder of Garnett; four brothers, Edward Yoder and wife Gertie of Arthur, Illinois, Marvin Yoder and wife Leah of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Nelson Yoder and wife Erma of Norwood, Missouri, Ben Yoder and wife Mary Susan of Welda, Kansas; one sister, Lydia May (Yoder) Kauffman and husband Willard of Arcola, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Eileen Yoder of Garnett; 18 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on February 12, 2016 at the Old German Baptist Church, 26036 NW Chase Road, Westphalia, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Amish Cemetery, 25180 NW Iowa Road, Garnett, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 6:30-8:30 PM Thursday evening at the church.
