Obituary of Harley Gibson

Harley Gibson Jr., age 91, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015, at the Residential Living Center, Anderson County Hospital, Garnett. He was born on February 20, 1924, in Garnett, Kansas, the son of Harley and Margaret (Roeckers) Gibson. Harley graduated from Garnett High School in 1942. He entered the US Army in May of 1943. During WWII he was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. Harley was honorably discharged in January of 1946. He returned to Garnett following his military service, where he began working for the City of Garnett. Harley was united in marriage to Shirley Burroughs on July 17, 1949 at the First United Methodist Church in Garnett, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with four daughters. He worked as the city clerk for the City of Garnett for several years before going to work as a millwright at the Wolf Creek power plant. He worked as a millwright for over 10 years before retiring. Harley enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He loved baseball, playing for the Garnett town team and then later coaching area teams. Harley was also an avid bowler and he enjoyed traveling to compete in tournaments. His greatest joy was his family; he will be remembered as an awesome dad and a loving grandpa. Harley was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Eileen Gibson in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Gibson, of the home; daughters, Susan Miller of Orlando, Florida, Denise Cottenmyre and husband, John of Emporia, Kansas, Diane O'Malley and husband, Gerry of Westphalia, Kansas, Karen Ledom and husband, John of Lawrence, Kansas; nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, August 21, 2015, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, Kansas. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
