Obituary of Dean Masters
Dean Harvey Masters, age 84, of Moran, Kansas, died December 9, 2008 in Topeka.
He was born August 2, 1924 at Herington, Kansas. He grew to manhood on the family farm southwest of Burlingame. He married Betty Barber of Eskridge, Kansas on October 15, 1945 at Emporia. They had just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. This union was blessed with eight children.
Dean began serving in the United States Air Force in 1947 and retired in 1960, due to a medical discharge. While in the service he was a building craft supervisor, a job that included his building a radar site in Korea. He was also an instructor, teaching eleven trades. His service work took him to Lackland AFB, Texas, Ft. Frances E. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Scottfield, Illinois, Barksdale AFB, Shreveport, Louisiana, Pease AFB, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Brize-Norton AFB, England, Sillisane, North Africa, Madrid, Spain and Korea. After retiring from the service, they lived in Eskridge, Williamsburg, Savonburg, Hepler, Stark, and Webb City, Missouri before moving to Moran in June of 1996.
Dean enjoyed working in his garden, hunting and fishing, and playing games with family, but his greatest joy was taking his grandchildren hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the VFW at Chanute, the American Legion at Walnut, D.A.V., and the North American Fishing Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas J. Masters and Lottie Ann (Stinson) Masters, grandson, Troy Masters, son-in-law, Lester Herrick, and two brothers, John and Dale Masters.
He is survived by his wife Betty of the home; three sons, Thomas Masters and wife, Gina of Mayetta, Kansas; Dean Masters, Jr. and wife, Mary of Chanute, and Tony Masters and wife, Alicia of Chanute, Kansas; five daughters, Linda Herrick of Eskridge, Kansas; Kathy Cox and husband, Jim of Spring, Texas; Nancy Starliper and husband, John of Savonburg, Debbie George and husband, Larry of Savonburg, Kansas; and Diane Meeds and husband, Gayle of Rogers, Arkansas; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild, and one great great grandchild on the way.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Moran, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Moran Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 7:00 PM Friday evening at the funeral home.
