Obituary of Hazel K. Rogers
Hazel K. Rogers, age 95, of Garnett, Kansas passed away, Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Anderson County Hospital, Garnett.
She was born April 9, 1914 the daughter of James Adelbert "Dell" and Eva May (Keeney) Bailey at home near the Greenfield school southeast of Garnett. In 1919 her family moved to town. She attended Longfellow school before graduating as Salutatorian of the Garnett High School class of 1933. In the fall of 1933 she began teaching at the Willowbranch School in Lincoln Township. On June 18, 1934 Hazel was united in marriage to Edwin Merle Rogers at Garnett. This union was blessed with five children. They made their home on Merle's family farm west of Garnett.
Hazel was baptized in the First Christian Church at the age of 9, by Pastor Cloverdale. She was a lifelong member; at the time of her death she held the longest continual membership. She had taught Sunday school in the Primary Department, Beginner's Class and was a member of the Opportunity Class; and sang in the choir for many years. Hazel was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star; Garnett Garden Club; Sunset Garden Club; Flower and Garden Club; Willing-to-learn Study Club; Junction Needlework Club; and the Prairie Chicken Camper Club. Hazel took several painting classes and enjoyed painting, and her iris and daylily gardens.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle, on December 18, 1991; her son, Neil Douglas Rogers on September 16, 1989; and a sister, Vivian Smith.
Hazel is survived by her children, Burke and Charlene Rogers of Garnett, Wesley and Kathy Rogers of Maple Falls, Washington, David and Carol Rogers of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Patricia Bever of Overland Park, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and her brother, James and Helen Bailey of Garnett.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 26, 2009 at the First Christian Church, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Glenloch Cemetery. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday evening at the funeral home.
