Obituary of Norma L. Coker
Norma L. Coker, age 81, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, formerly of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at her home in Tulsa.
She was born on July 22, 1933, at Louisburg, Kansas, the daughter of Dale Henry and Lela M. "Marge" (Martin) Grimes. She grew up in Paola, and graduated from Paola High School in 1951. She worked for Southwestern Bell in Kansas City after graduation.
Norma was united in marriage to Meryl D. Coker on June 8, 1952, in Paola, Kansas. They moved to Memphis in 1952 after their wedding, which was where Meryl was stationed. From 1953 to 1954, Norma worked as secretary to the principal at Paola High School while Meryl was in Korea. When he returned, they moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina for one year. They moved to Garnett in 1955, and built their house in 1966, which is where they lived for 40 years.
She was very active playing golf, and was the Women's President for a year at the Country Club. She belonged to several bridge clubs, and they were part owners of 45 acres of land where they spent a lot of time hiking, camping, and swimming with friends and family. They also enjoyed canoeing with other families. Norma was in the bowling league, and she loved junking and antiquing. She also loved drives in the country. They were not big travelers, but they took short trips together. Norma was very involved with their two children, and their kids' friends. Mom loved having girl slumber parties in her basement.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Meryl Coker on May 29, 2002; and her son Kary Coker on October 29, 1975.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Brazeal of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandchildren Stephanie, Lindsay and Jeremy, all of Tulsa; and one sister, Wilma R. Plummer of Paola, Kansas.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas. Condolences may be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com
