Obituary of Vera Rose Phillips
Vera Phillips, age 90, of McLouth, Kansas, formerly of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at her home.
Vera was born June 8th, 1924 on a farm northwest of Richmond, Kansas, the daughter of Charles William and Viola Elsie (Souders) Demoret. She attended Richmond and Princeton schools graduating from Princeton High School in 1942.
She was married to Tharan (Spike) Phillips on December 24th, 1944 in Ottawa, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children, son Melvin Phillips of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Goldana Shrum of McLouth, Kansas. Vera and Spike were married for 42 years. She graduated from Ottawa Business School and worked at Burkes Awning and Crystal Checks in Ottawa before she was married, Regal Manufacturing in Garnett for twelve years, and U.S.D. 365 Schools as a fulltime custodian for ten years until her retirement at age 80. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, sewing, and spending time with her family.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Spike, by her parents, Charles and Viola, and by a brother, Floyd Demoret.
She is survived by her sister Flossie Phillips of Lexington, Texas; brothers Charles Demoret of Simi Valley, California and Billy Demoret (Phyllis) of Topeka, Kansas; son Melvin Phillips (Dorothy) of Oklahoma City and daughter Goldana Shrum (David) of McLouth, Kansas; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at the Garnett First United Methodist Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, Kansas. Family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas.
