Obituary of Orvetta Jean Smock
Orvetta Jean Smock, 85, of Independence, MO, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014 at home with family.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 12, 2014 from 10-11 am at the Mcgilley & Sheil Chapel with service beginning at 11 am. A second visitation will be that afternoon from 2:15-2:45 pm at the Feuerborn Funeral Home prior to burial at 3pm at the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, KS.
Jean was born on January 14, 1929 in a little rock house in Mineral Point, KS to William K. & Sylvia (Lamm) Heider. She was their only child. She graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1947 where she designed the school flag. She attended UMKC from 1947 to 1949 and obtained her Associates Degree. In 1949 she married Alan D. Smock, who preceded her in death after 31 years of marriage. She was employed at Hallmark Cards for 43+ years. She was an accomplished artist. She enjoyed artwork, sewing, knitting & crocheting. After retirement she loved traveling with her friend Virginia. She loved nature & animals (cats in particular).
She was a very giving person. She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Mother-in-law, Aunt & Cousin. Jean is survived by her daughter, Heather J. Shaffer; son-in-law Ronald D. Shaffer; grandson Emory D. Shaffer; & many nieces & nephews. She has several cousins in Garnett, KS.
