Mrs. Benjamin was my first grade teacher in Garnett, Ks. I loved everyday of walking through her door. She always had a smile on her face ready for the new adventure of the day. I know that she will be missed by many.

Dorothy lived in my grandmother's home as was the custom for unmarried teachers at that time. I don't remember a time I did not know and love this gracious lady -- and I still remember looking down through the gear shaft at the brick street passing by since so soon after "the War" cars were still pretty primitive in our area. I was a flower girl at her wedding to Leon, who remains in my mind, the picture of a "courting" Kansas farmer. Bless them both; we are the poorer for their passing and the richer for their lives.

Mrs. Benjamin was very dear to me as on the last day of school when I was only in kindergarten, a tornado warning was sounded and she pulled me to her and hugged me during the whole time. My mother was out looking for my brothers who had walked home from school. There were 5 of us in my family and over a 15 year period, she taught us all. I thank God He allowed her to be in my journey. My condolences to all.

I join what I believe must be hundreds if not thousands of Anderson county children who developed a love of reading from Mrs. Benjamin. I'm sure her presence in the classroom has been missed these many years....as now her presence on Earth will be missed, but not forgotten. God blessed her in this life and now embraces her in the next!

Mrs. Benjamin did indeed touch many lives. She was one of the best teachers I had throughout all my years of school. She was also one of the finest people I have ever known. Mrs. Benjamin will be missed by all who ever came in contact with her. Prayers to her family.
