Marion D. Houk, age 74, of Olathe, formerly of Moran, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Olathe, Kansas. Marion was born on October 20, 1933, at Moran, Kansas, the son of Clarence A. and Mary Ann (Reade) Houk. He grew up and attended schools in Moran, graduating from Moran High School in 1951. He also attended Iola and Independence Junior Colleges, where he played football. Marion was united in marriage to Shirley Smith on June 6, 1954, in Moran. Five children were born to this union. He was a farmer as well as owning and operating the Houk Insurance Agency in Moran and Iola. In 1985 he moved to Des Moines, Iowa as President, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer for Farmers Casualty Company Mutual Insurance until retiring to Linn Valley, Kansas in 2000. In November of 2007 they moved to Olathe due to Marions failing health. He was a perpetual member of the Marmaton Lodge #245 of Moran, Scottish Rite of Fort Scott; and the Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg; the Linn Valley Community Church; and a member of the Moran Christian Church while living in Moran. Marion was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John Houk and C. Allen Houk. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Houk, of Olathe, Kansas; three sons, Stephen Houk and wife Linda of Moran, Kansas; Alan Houk and wife Shelia of Midland, Texas; Glenn Houk and wife Sharon of Overland Park, Kansas; two daughters, Kathy Singer and husband Nolan of Midwest City, Oklahoma; Debra Spencer and husband Randy of Huntsville, Alabama; twelve grandchildren; one step grandchild; nine great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Moran Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Moran Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7:00 8:00 PM, Friday evening at the funeral home in Moran. Memorial contributions may be made to the Moran Christian Church or the Linn Valley Community Church.
