Obituary of Robert W. Guilfoyle
Robert W. Guilfoyle, age 84, of Greeley, Kansas, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at the Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett, Kansas.
He was born on January 7, 1924, in Sperry, Oklahoma, the son of Henry J. Guilfoyle and Emily (Harkless) Guilfoyle. He grew up in Sperry, Oklahoma, graduating from Sperry High School in 1942. He served in the Marines from May 1942 to May 1946; serving in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Following the service he returned to the Tulsa area. Robert was united in marriage to Kathleen Lanzrath on July 8, 1947, in Greeley, Kansas. This union was blessed with ten children. In 1949 the couple moved to Greeley where they lived until current. Bob was a welder, working at B.E.H.M. and then Haven Steel, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Johns Church. He was the grounds keeper at the church for many years and hand dug graves in the St. Johns cemetery until the 1970s. Bob stayed busy with his farm, garden, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his retirement he took up bread baking and taught Kathleen to fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy Guilfoyle in 1986; three brothers, James, Jess and Francis Guilfoyle; and one sister, Theresa Watson.
Robert is survived by his wife, Kathleen Guilfoyle, of Greeley, Kansas; four sons, Robert Guilfoyle and wife Jacalyn of Lawrence, Kansas; William Guilfoyle and wife Jeanie of Fort Scott, Kansas; Frank Guilfoyle and wife Tammy of Richmond, Kansas; and Curt Guilfoyle and wife Connie of Richmond, Kansas; five daughters, Beverly Roeckers and husband John D. of Reedsburg, Wisconsin; Carolyn Hojnacki and husband Mark of Topeka, Kansas; Ruth Ohmes and husband Rick of Greeley, Kansas; Gerette Dennison and husband Brennan of Benton, Kansas; and Norma Rockers and husband Roger of Garnett, Kansas; two brothers, Otis Guilfoyle of Skiatook, Oklahoma and Donald Guilfoyle of Colby, Kansas; two sisters, Mary Spencer of Pueblo, Colorado and Elizabeth Sauer of Collinsville, Oklahoma; twenty-six grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas. Burial will follow at the St. Johns Cemetery in Greeley, Kansas. The family will greet friends following a wake service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Greeley, Kansas.
