Edward Dyrdek, age 93, formerly of Garnett, Kansas, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the V.A. Nursing Home in Topeka, Kansas. Edward Dyrdek, age 93, formerly of Garnett, Kansas, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the V.A. Nursing Home in Topeka, Kansas. Ed was born Neffs, Ohio on October 26, 1914 the son of John and Lody (Bishop) Dyrdek. He grew in Neffs, Ohio. He later worked in the coal mines near St. Clairsville, Ohio before entering the Army in October of 1941. He served as a mechanic in the 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop A, in Europe during WWII. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. He was united in marriage to Ann Setter on July 29, 1944, in Scipio, Kansas. This union was blessed with a daughter, Joan. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945. Following the service the couple lived in Kansas City before moving to Garnett, Kansas in 1946. After moving to Garnett they farmed until 1998 when they retired. Ed was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, V.F.W. In 1984 he earned the Kansas Bankers Award for Soil Conservation in Anderson County. Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Dyrdek; parents; step-mother, Ludwika (Krakowski) Dyrdek; an infant sister; and sister, Wanda Zdanski. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Dyrdek-Reed and her husband Rich of Topeka, Kansas; two grandsons, Lee Reed and Tyler Reed, one great-granddaughter, Izabella Reed; two sisters, Josephine Zien, and husband, Pete, of McMechen, West Virginia, and Jeanette Kendzora, and husband, Walter, of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 24, 2007 at Holy Angels Church, interment will follow in the Holy Angels Cemetery, Garnett. The family will greet friends following a rosary service at 7:00 Pm, Sunday evening at the funeral home in Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose Catholic School. The funeral home will be open Sunday afternoon after 3:00 P.M. for viewing.
