Obituary of Wayne Edward Howarter

Wayne E. Howarter, age 85, of Lone Elm, Kansas, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at Moran Manor in Moran, Kansas. Wayne was born September 2, 1922, at Lone Elm, Kansas, the son of Glenn and Eunice (Taylor) Howarter. He graduated from Kincaid High School in 1940. In 1941, he moved to San Diego to work in an airplane manufacturing facility. In 1942, he entered the Air Force, serving as a flight engineer on B24s during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Lone Elm, where he would make his home for the next 63 years. Wayne was a farmer and a stockman. He served 24 years as an Anderson County Commissioner; he was a member of the former Lone Elm United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriners, 40 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a life member of the V.F.W. He married LaVerne Henderson on October 17, 1944, in Kansas City, Kansas. Two sons were born to this union, Jerry and Terry. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Claron Howarter and sister, Blanche Badders. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Howarter, of the home; two sons, Jerry Howarter and wife Pam of Garnett, Kansas; Terry Howarter and wife Susan of Topeka, Kansas; his twin sister, Wanda Holmes and husband, Jim of Garnett, Kansas; two brothers, Ivan Howarter and wife, Hazel of Escondido, California; Wendell Howarter and wife Corine of Mesa, Arizona; six grandchildren, Jamie and wife, Amy, Mark and wife, Stephani, Matt and fiance Shiela, Dave, Katey, and Cari; two great-grandchildren, Meyer and Emily. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21, 2008, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Garnett, Kansas, with Pastor Lloyd Houk officiating. Burial will follow at the Lone Elm Cemetery in Lone Elm, Kansas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2008, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Garnett, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lone Elm Community Building or Shriners Childrens Hospital.
