Obituary of Freda Maxine Morlan

Freda Maxine Morlan, age 99, of Iola, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2019, at the Allen County Hospital, Iola.

She was born January 1, 1920, in rural Erie, Kansas, the daughter of Luther Everett and Mary Ann (Mitchell) Scoggin.  Freda went to elementary school at Oak Grove and graduated from Erie High School in 1936.  She attended Neosho County Community College.

Freda married LeRoy James “Doc” Morlan on February 2, 1938 in rural Erie, Kansas at her parents’ home.  This union was blessed with five children.

They lived on a farm east of Chanute for ten years.  In 1948, they moved to Iola, purchased and operated a PET milk route, and farmed their 80 acres.  She worked at several businesses in Iola and retired in 1967 from J.M. Powell Insurance Agency.  Freda liked her family and friends, she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading and doing puzzles.  She also liked working on her home, garden and flowers. Freda also liked her 4H work and was a leader for many years.

Freda was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Iola; the Over 50 Card Club and the hospital auxiliary.  She spent several years with the Trail Hounds Travel Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Mary Ann Scoggin; husband, LeRoy “Doc” Morlan; one sister, Vida Fern Lowe; one brother, Lloyd Everett Scoggin; one grandson, Scott Wayne Walters; one great grandson, Nicholas Wayne Clearwater; one great granddaughter, Christy Lynn Bicknell; and daughter-in-law, Agnes Marie (Gambill) Morlan.

Freda is survived by her children, Joan Marie Miller and husband Wardell of Iola, Kansas; Janet Louise Walters and husband Jerry of Bonner Springs, Kansas; Roy Evertt Morlan of Wichita, Kansas; Linda Sue Troxel of Topeka, Kansas; and Ethel “LeAnn” Seibert and husband Chuck of Iola, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; and 30 great grandchildren; 28 great great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild; two step grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas.  A graveside service will follow the visitation in Highland Cemetery, 1800 North Cottonwood, Iola, Kansas.  

Memorial contributions may be made to the The Foundry (formerly Trinity United Methodist Church in Iola) and may be left in care of the funeral home.
