Obituary of Rose Marie Cochran

Rose Marie Cochran, 90, of Iola, passed away February 1, 2019 at Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. She will be greatly missed by them and numerous nieces and nephews and their families and friends. Rose Marie, the 7th child out of 10 children and first daughter of Joseph John and Hallie Roberta Kintner Wright was born on April 20, 1928 on a small farm in Chariton County, near Marceline, Missouri.

She attended Holloway School, a rural one room school house, where early on she was not able to attend school because she didn’t have shoes.  Rose Marie was full of stories; at 8 years old on their farm near Mike, Missouri, a tornado blew out the living room windows and sucked out some furniture while the family was in the kitchen. Even at 80 years old she was deathly afraid of storms. In 1947 she graduated from Marceline High School. She met her husband to be, Clarence LeRoy “Bud” Cochran, also from Marceline at her friend’s house. He would pick her up from high school and drive her around in his old jalopy. They were married July 11, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri at Bud’s sister Gladys’ and Jeff Jefferson’s home.

Rose Marie and Bud lived in several places in the Kansas City area. Near downtown K.C., Blue Springs, Raytown and Independence, Missouri before moving to Iola, Kansas in the summer of 1959. Rose Marie was a stay at home Mom, Bud had wanted it that way after she worked just a short time at the Iola High lunch room. She volunteered at the old Allen County Hospital in the gift shop for many years. She has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Iola since 1959, back when it was located on the north side of the square. They raised their family here and all their kids and most of their grandchildren still live near Iola.

They have five children; Bruce and wife Judy Cochran, Iola, Dan and wife Regina Cochran, Iola, Patricia “Lynn” and husband Lavon Hammer, rural Colony, Pamela “Lea” and husband Darrell Baughn, Iola and Terri and husband Bill Luttrell, Iola.
