Obituary of Melvin Dean Smoot

Melvin Dean Smoot, age 61, of Iola, Kansas, passed away July 25, 2018, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center Emergency Room in Chanute, Kansas.

Melvin was born August 5, 1956, in Iola, Kansas, to Malvin Albert Smoot and Mary Ulrich Smoot LaCrone. Melvin graduated from the Iola High School in 1974. He and Melinda Robb were married on February 14, 1975, in Iola, Kansas. Melvin spent his life as a brick mason.

Melvin was known for his love of fishing. Melvin enjoyed helping kids fish, teaching them the basics of fishing, and helping with countless fishing tournaments and contests. Melvin and Matthew started a bass club for young kids called "Puddle Jumpers." Two kids from Puddle Jumpers took their fishing skills to the National BASS Competition. Melvin had two loves in his life: fishing and his twin granddaughters. Melvin was known for his love of others and was always there to lend a helping hand in times of need.

Melvin was preceded in death by his father; and one daughter, Marsha Kay Smoot.

Melvin is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Matthew John Albert Smoot and wife, Mandy, Humboldt; twin granddaughters, Kimber May and Adrian Celeste Smoot, Humboldt; mother, Mary LaCrone and husband, Don, Gas; sisters, Marilyn Leigh and husband, Glade, Humboldt, Lucinda Stanley and husband, Paul, Chanute, Lavina Chambers and husband, Jerry, Iola, Rhodenia Rowe and husband, Pat, Iola, Carol Feagins and husband, Tim, Tulsa, and Tracy Schainost and husband, Gary, Iola.

A memorial graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Kansas, followed by a celebration of life service at the LaHarpe City Hall, 902 South Washington Street, LaHarpe, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Melvin Smoot Memorial Fund, and may be left at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Iola, Kansas.
