Obituary of Rebecca Mendoza
Rebecca Mendoza, age 87, of Humboldt, Kansas passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 at Windsor Place in Iola following a brief illness.
Rebecca was born November 10, 1930 at Chanute, Kansas. Rebecca was the fourth of six children born to Heriberto and Catalina (Gutierrez) Ysusi. She grew up in Chanute, attending school there. On April 3, 1948 Rebecca married Jesse Mendoza at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Chanute. They initially made their home in Chanute, moving to Humboldt in 1956, where she lived for the rest of her life. In 1965 Rebecca and Jesse built Las Palomas in Humboldt. They owned and operated the restaurant for over 37 years, retiring in 2002. Rebecca loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her caring heart was demonstrated through her love and care that she extended to her family and friends. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Jesse on October 15, 2013; two brothers, Joe and Fred Ysusi; sister, Josephine Sanchez and step-sister, Vicky Hernandez.
She is survived by her five children, Phyllis Perez and husband, Lupe, of Humboldt, Esther Roush and husband, Vern, of Topeka, Kansas, Larry Mendoza and wife, Karen, of Humboldt, Lydia Baker and husband, John, of Iola, Bridget Headley and husband, Jerry, of Lebo, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Trine Ysusi of Humboldt, Phillip Ysusi and Louis Ysusi, both of Independence, Kansas; sister, Esther Solis of Kansas City, Kansas; two step-sisters, Linda Hernandez of Independence, Kansas, and Genevieve Wiggins of McPherson, Kansas; step-brother, Ed Godinez of Independence, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 7, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Humboldt. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph's Cemetery, Humboldt. The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall following a 7:00 PM Rosary at the Church on Wednesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
