Obituary of Robert "Bob" Lee Young

Robert L. "Bob" Young, age 91, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Guest Home Estates, Garnett.

He was born November 25, 1926 in Anderson County, Kansas, the son of Guy and Edith (Downs) Young. He graduated from Garnett High School, Garnett, Kansas, and earned a Bachelor Degree at Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas.

Bob joined the Army Air Corps, later changed to Army Air Force, January 19, 1946, at Lowry Field, Colorado. He played football for the "Clark Field Bombers" while in the Air Force. Bob was assigned to the 1st Bomb Squadron and 9th Bomb Group in the Philippines Islands. He was Assistant Crew Chief, he pre-flew planes to determine condition and operation of the airplanes, and was a mechanic on B-29's, which were part of the Enola Gay Squad. Bob was promoted to Corporal, and he received the WWII Victory Medal.

Bob married Betty Shadle in 1950. They were blessed with two children, Deb and Tim. They later divorced. In 1965, Bob married Hildy Adams, they enjoyed 39 years of marriage until she passed away on May 4, 2004. Bob married Gladys Lankard in October of 2005. They later divorced, but remained friends until the end. He loved football in high school, Air Force and College. Bob loved to hunt and fish, and loved to go dancing on weekends and still loved to dance at Guest Home Estates. He studied Science and P.E. while in college, and he loved to coach football. Bob was a teacher and coach in Bronson, LaCygne, Emment, Green, Randolf, Geneseo, Beverly, Gypsum and Garnett. Bob retired after 35 years of teaching.

Bob loved camping trips and family 4th of July celebrations, and hunting trips with family and friends. He wanted his children and grandchildren to stay healthy, believe in God, and be a good person your whole life. He loved his family, stayed healthy and was an honest man, he felt like he kept a lot of boys out of jail by being a good Coach.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Edith Young; two brothers, David Young and Guy Young Jr.; four sisters, Dorothy Peery, Ruth McRoberts and Freedia Fisher Parker, Leona Huggins; and one granddaughter, Krista Byerley Shannon.

Bob is survived by his children, Tim Young and wife Jeanette of Garnett, Kansas; Deborah Polson and husband Don of Louisburg, Kansas; RuthAnn (Adams) Knight and husband Don of Marion, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Young and wife Glendina of Westphalia, Kansas; Gene Young of Garnett, Kansas; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Garnett. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the Cherry Mound Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post #6397 or to Guest Home Estates and left in care of the funeral home.
