Obituary of Dan Barcus
Dan Stephen Barcus, age 62, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018, at Richmond Healthcare in Richmond, Kansas.
Dan was born October 26, 1955, to Leo and Mary Barcus of Agency, Iowa. He graduated from Cardinal High School in Eldon, Iowa in 1973. After high school, Dan attended Ottumwa Heights Junior College in Ottumwa, Iowa. While there he met his life-long friends, Kameron Reeves, Allen Hubbell and Dennis Snyder. Upon graduating with his Associates Degree in 1976, Dan earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing at Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska, graduating in December of 1978. Dan also attended Bill Kinnamon Umpire School in Florida for two semesters.
In September of 1978, while attending Wayne State College, Dan met his one true love, Lori Yunker. They were married June 23, 1979 at United Methodist Church in Agency, Iowa. Dan and Lori were eventually blessed with two children, William Dan Barcus born on June 28, 1990 and Amanda Lynn Barcus on June 8, 1994. The family moved to Garnett, Kansas in December of 1999 to manage Garnett's ALCO. Dan worked in retail management for over 38 years (25 with ALCO) with four different chains and until moving to Garnett the family had moved several times, living in five states and several towns inside those states.
Dan was active in umpiring, coaching and refereeing during his life-time. He enjoyed hiking, traveling, music, baseball of any and all levels, and other sports. His favorite teams being his Iowa Hawkeyes and the St Louis Cardinals. He 'adopted' Lori's Royals and Huskers as well. He enjoyed being around all children and encouraging their laughter. His love for his own two children was boundless and he could always be found at all of their activities.
In Garnett, Dan was a member of the Chamber Players and could be found there frequently working behind the scenes. He could be counted on as a helper in many capacities around town plus, helping Lori with her volunteer work and doing it all in his quiet way. He donated time and support to many organizations in town and was always willing to help anyone if he possibly could. Dan was an active member of Mt Olive Lutheran Church and spent time over the years serving on the school board, ushering, helping with money counting, and cleaning, etc., as time and distance allowed.
Dan is survived by his beloved wife Lori and their children; Will and Amanda; one sister, Mary Lynne Marlay of Agency, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many, many dearly loved friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents, Leo and Mary Barcus, and his brother, Chris Barcus.
A memorial service for Dan will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 9514 Perry Lane, Overland Park, Kansas 66212. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. The family will greet friends in Garnett from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 219 S.
