From my 91 year old father, Carl Berglund, of Pasadena. He writes, "To Al Richardson's Survivors, I read Al's obituary in the Pasadena Star News on 2-10-18. Al and I were in the same boot camp platoon, I was 17 at the time and Al was an older leader. After boot camp we went our different ways. I graduated from U.S.C. in 1952 in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, I went to work at Cal Tech and then JPL. At JPL, we met again. We were friends and later, I joined the Toastmasters Group that Al headed up. I worked as a Designer of Rocket Engines, Structures, Conceptual Studies, and Deep Space Antenna's and I retired in 1989. Al was a friend, and a helper along life's journey. Carl Berglund (My wife and I had four children, Virginia (Ginger), Lenard, Karin, and Karla. My wife passed away in 2016. We were married 63 years)."

Al Richardson has been an inspiration to me since I joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory over 35 years ago. His Toastmasters' coaching gave me the skills and confidence to speak in front of large audiences. Since then, I've spoken to hundreds, possibly thousands, about my work and been thrilled by their appreciation. When unnerved by waves of doubt, Al's words of encouragement helped me to ride them. Al, thank you for speaking to me. My condolences to Al Richardson's family and friends. Like many other JPLers, I'm sad for the passing of a great man.

As both a fellow Toastmaster and a fellow Lion, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of Past Toastmasters International Director Al. He truly had a servant's heart as he unselfishly served his fellow Toastmasters and through Lions, his community. May His holy spirit comfort the family and may Al rest in His eternal peace.
