Linna and I will surely miss a great friend, we have enjoyed every visit we had with Gene and Shari, and the friendship over the last 40 years or more. No matter how much pain he was having he always managed a smile and a laugh when we would visit together. Gene took his work very serious and cared about whatever the problem was. I remember many times during his time as Garnett's Fire Chief and the fires we fought together he took his responsiblities very serious and with great pride. As an example every detail was covered when we went back to Wisconsin to purchase a new Fire Truck for the City of Garnett, he wanted all the facts and features covered before he would sign off on the acceptance. Linna and I will surely miss a great guy and Friend, may God find peace and rest for this special man. Ed & Linna Toomey

Gene was one of my favorite individuals. He always brought a smile to my face and I was always glad to see him. He left a great legacy of faith that is being lived out in three generations that follow him. What a legacy. What a great man. My condolences to the family.

I loved knowing Gene. He was a man of integrity and so nice to everyone. He will be missed! I know he is enjoying his eternal reward right now but I'm so sad to say goodbye.....guess I'll just say "see you later".

Shari and Dan So very sorry to learn of Gene’s passing, he was truly a wonderful guy. I have many found memories of seeing him at the PA system at church on a Sunday morning and he surely will be missed. He always had a smile and always responded to my lean mean gene comment with good morning governor. Gene and Shari lived in the same block I did when I first moved to Garnett. Gene would clean the sidewalks of the whole block when it snowed. He never said anything and I found out from someone else that he was the one who did it. I am sorry for your loss Shari.

Gene was a great guy & we were glad to have known him. While on a cruise to Hawaii, we ran into Gene & Shari in a Mall. Truley is a small world. RIP Gene.....sure they have cool old cars in heaven!

I am so sorry, he was my favorite mechanic! I knew I could trust him and WE knew he would fix it right the 1st time! I know he was in a lot of pain, God bless him. I was also fortunate enough to cut his hair many, many times, I always called him "mean Gene" because there wasn't a mean bone in his body. I think he told me a story about someone else calling him that and it stuck with me. God Bless you all!
