Obituary of Robert E. Shields

Robert E. Shields, age 81, of Princeton, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Ottawa Retirement Village in Ottawa, Kansas. Bob was born on April 4, 1936, in Harris, Kansas. He was the youngest of six children born to Harry and Mary (Keffer) Shields. Bob's family moved to Garnett when he was a young boy. He attended school at Garnett. Picking up a hitchhiker in 1956 would result in Bob meeting the love of his life, Dorothy, sixty years of marriage would follow. Bob married Dorothy Rossman on April 30, 1957 at Richmond, Kansas. They were blessed with four children. They made their home in Garnett, Colony and Richmond before moving to Princeton in 1971. Bob worked at the General Motors Fairfax Assembly Plant for over 27 years, retiring in 1993. Bob loved to fish, he especially enjoyed sharing that love of fishing with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed his bird dogs and quail hunting, woodworking and playing his guitar. Bob loved music and he rarely missed an opportunity to take in a show at area Opry houses. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mary June Kment, Georgia Moody, Bonnie Lee, and Dolly Nickelson; and one brother, Dave Shields. Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy Shields, of the home; three daughters, Rhonda Kinion and husband Marcus of Princeton; Linda Detwiler and husband Keith, and Darlene Reed and husband Steve, all of Richmond, Kansas; one son, Gary Shields and wife Sharon of Princeton, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren, Stacey, Clint and Ben; Derek, Daniel and Kristin; Joshua, Jennifer and Adam; Jarret, Patrick, Sarah and Ethan; and sixteen great grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, October 12, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, Kansas. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Scipio, Kansas. The family will greet friends following a Rosary at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas.
