Obituary of Luther P. Webster

Luther P. Webster, age 78, of Iola, Kansas passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at the Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola. Luther was one of nine children born to James Luther Webster and Margaret Avon (Phillips) Webster. He was born September 18, 1938 at Salisbury, Maryland. Luther grew up in Hebron, Maryland, and attended school there as well. Luther served in the US Navy following school. Luther was a very hard worker. In his words, he began working and smoking at the age of 5. He enjoyed both for the rest of his years. He worked as a truck driver, in Maryland and Virginia. While working as a truck driver for Mrs. Smith's pie company, Luther found his sweetheart, Carole Culbertson, working in the office. They were married on September 15, 1972 in Virginia. In 1973 they were planning to move to California but a stop in Iola to visit Carole's family resulted in Iola becoming their permanent home that lasted for 44 years. They originally made their home on the farm of Carole's parents. Luther worked as a security guard at the Wolf Creek Power Plant for eleven years. He then began working power plant outages across the country, where Luther worked in the machine shop or as a heavy equipment operator. In 2015 Luther retired due to health issues, but he wasn't happy about it, he still wanted to work. After selling the farm, they moved to town. Aside from his work and cigarettes Luther enjoyed watching NASCAR, but his greatest joy was spoiling, Carole. Luther was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole, on May 24, 2006; and six of his siblings. He is survived by his children Rick Coultas and wife, Sue, Brenda Smith, Nina Johnson and husband, Terry, Pam Jordan and husband, Michael; 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Mitchell of Eden, Maryland and Susie Collins of Salisbury, Maryland. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on August 1, 2017 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 16 N. Buckeye, Iola. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery, Iola. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to ACARF.
