Obituary of Thomas Anthony Warren

Thomas A. Warren, 92, of Iola, Kansas passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017 in Iola. Tom was born November 22, 1924 in Garnett, KS to D. O. and Ethel (Britton) Warren as the second of four boys. He grew up on the family farm west of Garnett. He graduated from Garnett High School in 1942, and attended the University of Kansas for a time. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served for two years during World War II. Following his military service he farmed for a few years, then purchased the Anderson County Sale Barn which he operated for several years. He built and owned the Allen County Sale Barn in Gas, KS in 1958. He worked for many years as an auctioneer. He bought his own farm in 1963, and lived out the rest of his working life doing what he loved most – raising his cattle. He was known by many as the finest cattleman in Kansas, and made sure to pass on his skills to his grandson Dalton Weatherbie. He married Virginia L. Cornell on August 27, 1973 in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in rural LaHarpe on the farm. After retirement they moved to their current home in Iola. Up until the last two months, he continued caring for his cattle and putting up hay at the age of 92. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Richard and Robert Warren. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Virginia of the home; two sons, Donald Warren and wife Kris of Island City, Oregon, and Steven Warren and wife Denise of Dodge City, KS; stepson, Gene Weatherbie and wife Teresa of rural LaHarpe, KS; three stepdaughters, Stephanie Newkirk of Springfield, MO, Melissa Ambrose of Iola, and Kate Newkirk, also of Iola; grandchildren, Jack, Scott, Rick, Trisha, Tara, Robert, Dalton, Cassidy, Celeste, Ashley, Thomas and Heath; thirteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Tom will be at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 4 at the Carlyle Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be the evening prior on Monday from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola, 16 N Buckeye St. Cremation will follow the service, and his family will bury his remains on his farm at a later date.
