Obituary of Seatta Lily VanDonge

Seatta Lily VanDonge, age 100, of Garnett, Kansas, formerly of Goodland, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Guest Home Estates in Garnett, Kansas. She was the eighth of ten children born to John and Emma (Hornbacher) Peter. Seatta was born on August 13, 1916, at Fremont, Nebraska. Her family moved to Goodland, Kansas when she was a young girl, she completed school at Goodland. Seatta was united in marriage to Bert VanDonge on October 19, 1935, at Sharon Springs, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children. After living in Sharon Springs for a while Seatta and Bert returned to Goodland, living on their farm southeast of town. Seatta worked at home on the farm while her children were young. In 1964 they moved into Goodland, where Seatta worked at McDonald’s Department Store and cleaning houses for others. In the late 1960’s they purchased the Riley Motel in Hays, Kansas, remaining there until 1978, when they returned to Goodland. Bert preceded Seatta in death in 1980, she then worked in the office for a local truck stop, and then as a cook at the Senior Center and the VFW. In 1985 Seatta married Melvin “Si” Standish, he preceded her in death on January 7, 2005. She enjoyed square dancing and sewing. Due to her declining health, Seatta moved to Garnett on April 7, 2011 to be near her daughter, Cheryl. Seatta was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Bert VanDonge; her second husband, Melvin “Si” Standish; son, Wayne VanDonge; granddaughter, Tina Marie Amos, and her five sisters and three brothers, Francis Peter, Laura Walters, Ruth Smith, Florence Frailey, Irene Daise, Elmer, Edwin, Arthur Peter and one infant sibling. She is survived by her son, Bob VanDonge and wife Roberta of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; daughter, Cheryl Varvel and husband Larry of Garnett, Kansas; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and twelve great great grandchildren. A celebration of Seatta’s life will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, Kansas. Her family will greet friends following the funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at 12:00 PM (MST), Monday, August 29, 2016, at the Goodland Cemetery, Goodland, Kansas.
