Obituary of Larry DePoe
Larry DePoe, age 74, of Lone Elm, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at his home.
He was born on August 26, 1941, in Garnett, Kansas, the second of three children born to Lester E. and Loella C. (Klooz) DePoe. Larry was a lifetime resident of the Lone Elm area, never living more than five miles from where he started. Larry graduated from Kincaid High School in 1959. Larry was united in marriage to Sandra Gervais on November 21, 1990 in Fort Scott, Kansas.
Larry was a lifelong farmer and loved his work, to the point that it was also his hobby. He began farming with his father and later his brother, Lonnie joined them. Larry and Lonnie formed DePoe Farms in 1981. He enjoyed antique farm machinery of all kinds; he was especially partial to Minneapolis Moline and Farmall tractors. His "break" from farming would consist of, modifying and building things in his shop. He could be coaxed off of the farm by taking trips, camping and canoeing, especially if it included a visit to a National Park, with the Grand Canyon being his favorite. He loved spending time with family and friends but the grandkids and great-grandkids brought him a special joy.
He was a member of the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau Board, Anderson County Water District #5 for 30 plus years, Lone Elm Volunteer Fire Department, Anderson County Historical Society, Co-Op Board, Deer Creek Boosters. He served as the Lone Elm Township Treasurer. Larry was always willing to help out when needed, whatever the task may be.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Robert Morgan; and brother-in-law Gerald Welsh.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sandra DePoe of the home; daughter, Susanna Thyer and husband Jeff of Pittsburg, Kansas; stepsons, Russell Morgan of Mound City, Kansas, Wayne Hester, Jr. and wife Rita of Drexel, Missouri; grandchildren, Caleb Thyer, Casey Thyer and fiancée Lindsey Palmer, Calvin Thyer, Elizabeth Staton and husband Wes, Amanda Gilbert and husband Kevin; great grandsons, Dalton, Bronx and Matthew; sister, LaNelle Welsh of Kincaid, Kansas; brother, Lonnie DePoe and wife Bobbye of Lone Elm, Kansas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 1, 2016, at the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church, Kincaid, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Lone Elm Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday evening at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, Kansas. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lone Elm Community Building or to the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church or to the Kincaid Fair Association and left in care of the funeral home.
