Obituary of Lloyd Swanson

Lloyd Swanson, 89, of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at Manor Care in Overland Park. Lloyd was born January 21, 1919, in Savonburg, Kansas, to Ernest and Agnes Swanson of Savonburg, Kansas. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine S. Swanson; loving father of Tom Swanson & wife, Bobbi of Coffeyville, KS and stepfather of Jerry Roberts & wife, Connie of Olathe, Kansas; adored grandpa of Samantha Creedon & husband, Chris of Aurora, IL and Derek Roberts of Olathe, KS; and great-grandpa of the late Emma Rose Creedon. He was preceded in death by his brother, Estus, and sisters Lucille Norton and Eileen Logan. Lloyd graduated from Savonburg High School in 1936 and Pittsburg State Teachers College in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942, after the start of WWII, and was a twin engine bomber pilot. He held the rank of Captain upon his discharge in 1946 and later retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserve in 1979. He married Lorraine Stierwalt Roberts, a former Savonburg classmate, in 1948. Lloyd, Lorraine and Jerry lived in Sunflower Village while he completed his education at Kansas University, graduating in 1949. Lloyd worked as a cashier at Stark State Bank in 1950 before moving to the Iola State Bank, Iola,Kansas, in 1958. He retired from the Iola State Bank in 1986 as Vice President. Lloyd was an active member of the Iola community and belonged to the Mirza Shrine, Iola Kiwanis, Wesley United Methodist Church and the Iola Country Club. He and Lorraine moved to and lived in Kansas City since 1996. Lloyd was a warm and loving husband, dad, and grandpa and he will truly be missed by all. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. The Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola, with military honors.
