Obituary of Betty Smith

Betty Gayle Smith, 85, of Moran, Kansas, died Saturday, December 17, 2011, at the Moran Manor. Betty was born July 10, 1926, at Deerfield, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence H. and Louise Lorene (Lehnus) Shepherd. She grew up in the Odense, Stark and Chanute areas, graduating from Chanute High School in 1944. On November 23, 1944, Betty married William V. "Willie" Smith at Columbus, Kansas. They made their home at Savonburg before moving to their home at Stark on Highway 39 where they resided for 50 years. They then made their home at Elsmore for 12 years until moving to Moran three years ago. Betty had managed the Olson's Grocery in Savonburg besides being a homemaker and raising her three daughters. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed reading and word puzzles. She taught Sunday School at the Savonburg Christian Church while raising her daughters. "Willie" Smith of the home 3 Daughters: Cheryl Wallis & husband, Jerry of Moran, KS, Margaret Jackman & husband, Danny of Moran, KS, and Nancy Houk and husband, Lloyd of Moran, KS 1 Sister: Lorene Reynolds of Redding, CA 4 Grandchildren: Donnie Van Wallis & wife, Darla of Claremore, OK, Jay Jackman & wife, Sara of Savonburg, KS, Anthony Houk & wife, Janell of Parsons, KS and Andrea Hottenstein & husband, Rickie of Humboldt, KS 10 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Granddaughter on the way She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Wallis, one sister, Geneva Herrin and four brothers, Basil, LeRoy, Howard and Jimmy Shepherd. IN-STATE: She will lie in-state at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2011 FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Iola.
