Obituary of Velda Scheibmeir
Velda Athene (Stewart) Scheibmeir, born July 29, 1915, daughter of James Jackson Stewart, Sr. and Lura Ethel (Rayburn) Stewart. She was born on a farm northwest of Yates Center in Woodson County. She worked as a domestic engineer for Freda Burke, Ruth Newman, Nellie Manifold, Gertrude Gibbs, Lola Hefner, and many others. She also worked at Artex sewing factory, Peter Pan ice cream cafe. She worked six years at the Star Motel as clerk and switchboard operator. The last work has been with her daughter Karen in her antique shop. She loved visiting and meeting people from other states.
She belonged to the Busy Bee Club of Neosho Falls when Maude George was president. She belonged to the Altar Society of Piqua, she remembered peeling a peck of potatoes and baking pies for the Thanksgiving dinners they fixed for years to raise money for the church upkeep. She had many hobbies including collecting bottles of all sizes, shapes, and colors, collecting stamps and music boxes, she made recipe books, scrap books, and pictures on velvet with costume jewelry. She also enjoyed trips to the casino with her family. She loved to travel and has been in forty of the fifty states.
She married Edward John Scheibmeir Oct. 12, 1938, and to this union seven children were born, Larry Eugene, Gloria Yvonne, Karen Louise, Sara Jane, Daryl Duane, Eddie Dean, and Lurita Ann. Sara Jane died as an infant in 1946. The children were raised on the farm near Piqua. In 1966, they left the farm and moved to Yates Center, where she lived at the time of her death. Her husband Edward preceded her in death April 19, 1995. Her parents, and one brother, James Jackson Stewart, Jr. are deceased. Two son-in-laws, Don Westerman and Larry Clarke also preceded her in death.
She leaves to mourn her death, her six children, Larry, Gloria, Karen, Daryl, Eddie and Lurita, and their spouses. Twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, two brothers, Gerald Stewart of Wichita, and Marvin R. Stewart of Mesa, Arizona, five sister-in-laws, two brother-in-laws, many nieces and nephews and friends.
VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wed., April 1, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, KS.
ROSARY: 10:30 a.m., Thurs., April 2, 2009 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Piqua, KS
MASS: 11:00 a.m., Thurs., April 2, 2009, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Piqua, following the rosary. The Reverend Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant.
BURIAL: St. Martin's Cemetery in Piqua, KS.
