Obituary of Edna Means
Edna L. Means, 98, of Iola, Kansas, died Friday May 8, 2009, at the Iola Nursing Center in Iola, Kansas.
Edna was born September 26, 1910, on a farm near Erie, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Abigail (McGinnis) Simmons. She graduated from Erie High School in 1928. She attended Pittsburg State Teachers College where she obtained a teaching certificate.
She taught in rural schools until marrying Frank E. Means on June 3, 1934. They lived in Central City, Nebraska, until returning to the farm near Erie where they lived until moving to Iola. He preceded her in death on October 1, 1989.
Edna worked as a proof reader for the Iola Register for several years. She was instrumental in the formation of girl scouting in the area, was an avid reader, enjoyed quilting, and playing bridge.
She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.

3 Daughters: Carol Mann & husband, Scott of Georgetown, Texas; Hilda Roberts & husband, Kevin of Great Bend, Kansas; and Janet Rice of Bartlesville, Oklahoma
3 Grandchildren: Carrie Rivera, Steven Voisinet, and Amy Rice
2 Great Grandchildren: Ethan and Megan Rivera
1 Sister: Mary Wright & husband, Lonny of Ft. Worth, Texas
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gene Rice; a grandson, David Rice; and by two sisters, Georgia White and Hilda Ludlow.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the East Hill Cemetery at Erie, Kansas.
