Obituary of Thomas Maxwell

Thomas R. Maxwell, 84, of Iola, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Iola Nursing Center. Tom was born December 8, 1927, at Oakmont, Pennsylvania, the son of John V. and Edith (Mattner) Maxwell. He grew up in Pennsylvania and graduated from high school in 1945 at Aspinwall, Pennsylvania. Tom served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He received his bachelor's degree from Muskingum University in Ohio, where he met his future wife, Joann Hostetler. Tom received his Masters in Animal Science from Kansas State University. On December 28, 1953, Tom and Joann were married at Smithville, Ohio. They moved to Iola in 1954. Tom worked for the Kansas Cooperative Extension Service of Kansas State University. He served 38 years as a county agent in Allen County and also worked in 4-H and agriculture. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and former Kiwanas member. Tom was a K-State fan who enjoyed gardening, family trips and spending time with his family and grandkids. SURVIVORS: His wife of 58 years: Joann Maxwell of the home 4 Children: Ann McLean of Iola, KS, Tom Maxwell & wife, Jane of Salina, KS, Linda Laughlin & husband, Michael of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Eric J. Maxwell of Iola, KS 10 Grandchildren: Kristen Triebel, Brett McLean, Abby,Sally & Andy Maxwell, Tom, Greg & Kim Laughlin, and Molly & Eric T. Maxwell. 2 Great Grandchildren: Brielle Triebel and Austin Maxwell He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law and grandsons, Lisa, Joel and Avery Maxwell, and his brother, John Maxwell. VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, April 6, 2012, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola.
