Obituary of Marcella "Markey" Helena Serene
Marcella Helena "Markey" Serene, age 85, of Garnett, Kansas passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
Markey was born February 13, 1924 at Scipio, Kansas the daughter of, Henry John and Gertrude Ida (Wolken) Kueser. Her family moved to Garnett when she was 7 years old. After attending Garnett schools she married Jack Serene on October 24, 1941 at Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with two daughters. The couple lived in Wichita for a year before Jack entered the service. She followed Jack while in the service, moving back to Garnett while he was overseas. They moved to Welda, Kansas in 1946 and purchased a grocery store there. In 1947 they moved to their current home in Garnett. Markey was a homemaker, she also worked part time at the Garnett Greenhouse.
Markey was a member of the First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School there. She was very artistic, utilizing her talents for painting and sewing. She will be remembered for her homemade birthday cards in which would paint and write a poem for each card. While her daughters were young she was very active in all of their activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Elmer Kueser; and five sisters, Edna Wells, Mary Ann Tush, Ethel Showalter, Bernice Spears and Juliette Marmon.
Markey is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jack, of the home; her daughters, Julee Ann Serene Smail and her husband, John, of Auburn, Kansas, Tammy Serene Kruse and husband, David, of Garnett; one sister, Joyce Jellison of Arleta, California; and her four grandchildren, Emily Serene Smail, Trevor John Smail, Erin Jessie Kruse and Jordan Serene Kruse.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 7:00 PM, Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
