Obituary of Charles Hess

Charles E. "Chuck" Hess, 58, of rural LaHarpe, Kansas, died Friday, April 10, 2009, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Chuck was born March 31, 1951, in Iola, Kansas, the son of James G. and Genevieve (Ellis) Hess. He grew up on the family farm southwest of LaHarpe. He attended Zillah Grade School and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1970. He graduated from Allen County Community College and took over the operation of the family farm. On July 9, 1971, Chuck married Mary Hottenstein at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt. They have always made their home on the farm. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt and the Allen County Farm Bureau. He was active in the Full-O-Pep 4-H Club east of Humboldt growing up and as a leader when his sons were growing up. Chuck enjoyed visiting and playing cards and making stained glass projects. SURVIVORS: Wife: Mary Hess of the home 2 Sons: Brian Hess & wife, Jana of Valley Center, Kansas, and Brett Hess of Indianapolis, Indiana 2 Grandchildren: Kennady and Caden Hess 4 Brothers: Jerry Hess of El Dorado, KS, Phillip Hess of Butler, MO, Robert Hess of Lawrence, KS, and Bernie Hess of Humboldt, KS 1 Sister: Joan Brigham of Leighton, PA Many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents and by two sisters, Julie Hess and Ann Ballenger. Cremation has taken place. ROSARY SERVICE: 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt. VISITATION: 7:30-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at St. Joseph's Parish Hall following the rosary. MEMORIAL: Allen County 4-H Council Memorials may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
