Obituary of David J. Axtell

David Junior Axtell, age 88, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at the Anderson County Long Term Care Facility in Garnett, Kansas. David was born on May 15, 1921, at Harris, Kansas, the son of Michael David and Sarah (Moberly) Axtell. He lived in the area and graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1940. On August 14, 1940, he was united in marriage to Donnie Day at Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with five children. David worked as a farmer until 1958, then moved to Garnett in 1960. He then worked at Deep Rock Appliance Store in Garnett. He owned Axtell Recreation Center, and was a paint contractor, painting fuel and fertilizer tanks for Farmland Industries all over the central United States. He then started carpet cleaning after the painting industry dwindled out. His carpet business was known as D & D Carpet Cleaning Service, in business for over 30 years, up until a few weeks ago. He enjoyed fishing, gardening including his melons and tomatoes, and making canes. He also loved to travel, and help out at the Senior Center, but his greatest joy was his family. David was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Lyle; four brothers, Harry, Clarence, Dewey, and Lester; two sisters, Anna Baum and Mary Kuhn; and one grandson, Bryan Dale Axtell. He is survived by his wife Donnie Axtell of the home; three sons, William (Mike) Axtell and wife Judy of Wichita, Kansas; James (Jim) Axtell and wife Carolyn of Sublette, Kansas; Darrell (Wayne) Axtell and wife Kay (Hoffmeier) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one daughter, Linda Sears and husband Ronnie of Garnett, Kansas; nine grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Garnett Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas. Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the funeral home in Garnett.
