Obituary of Walter Crick

Walter F. Crick, 93, of Burwell, Nebraska, formerly of Iola, Kansas, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell, Nebraska. Walt was born July 27, 1915, in Iola, Kansas. His father, Carlton, was a postal clerk in Iola, and his mother, Margaret, was a stay home mom. Walter had one brother who was ten years his senior. He grew up and attended school in Iola. He was active in tennis and basketball. He was an avid baseball fan even though he did not play the game. Walter met Helen Weast while attending Junior College in Iola. They dated for two years before marrying on March 6, 1937. They continued to live in Iola where Walter worked in the grain business. Their son, Bryan, was born in 1939. While in Iola, Walter served on the Iola School District Board of Education. He was president for one year. He was a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed to Allen County Historical Society and served in the capacity of President. He also served as Secretary of the Iola Rotary Club for several years. Walter also worked for a natural gas company for 22 years where he held the position of District Right-of-way Supervisor. While in Alva, he was Exalted Ruler for the Elks Club and secretary of the Rotary Club. Walter and Helen loved to travel. They visited many areas of the United States including Seattle, WA, San Diego, CA, Miami Beach, FL, Washington DC, Boston, MA and Pittsburgh, PA. They were also avid fishermen and liked fishing at night in the Neosho River. Another hobby that Walter and Helen both enjoyed was gardening and caring for their flowers. At one time, Helen had more than 25 different varieties of roses. The two cocker spaniels they had provided them with many hours of entertainment. SURVIVORS: 4 Grandchildren & their families: Katrina Crick of Tulsa, OK and her sons, Andrew & James Maudlin; Michael Crick of Terrell, TX and his children, Aaron & Kelsey Crick; Tammy Sue & Roger Donaldson of Norwalk, WI and their children, Chase & Montana Donaldson; and Erika Crick & Mike Riddle and their daughter, Sarah Anne Riddle of Comstock, NE Daughter-In-Law: Barbara Crick of Burwell, NE He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, his wife in 1997 and by his son, Bryan Crick, in 2008. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Highland Cemetery in Iola. The Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
