Obituary of Rex Calahan

Ivan Rex Calahan, 92, of Iola, Kansas died Monday July 7, 2014 at the Moran Manor in Moran, Kansas. He was born on February 10, 1922 in Oberlin, Kansas the son of Arthur George and Pearl Mae ( King ) Calahan. Rex moved to the Colony area with his family at the age of thirteen. He worked in the Garnett area before serving with the U.S. Army during WW II. On June 9, 1946, he married Tena Runnells and they lived in Colony before moving to a farm near Lone Elm. They left the farm and moved to Kincaid where they lived for thirty years. He was postmaster and then delivered rural mail before retiring. They moved to Iola in 1985. He was a member of the Kincaid V.F.W, Kincaid Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, and the Ft. Scott Consistory. Survivors: Wife; Tena Three sons; Robert of Ottawa, Darrel of Colony, and Douglas of Brighton, Colorado One daughter; Nancy Henderson of Olathe One sister; Wanda Quick of Joplin, Missouri Ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren He was preceded in death by a son Larry and three brothers, Robert, Kenneth, and Virgil. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 11th, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Cremation will follow the visitation with inurnment in the Lone Elm Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and may be left at the Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel who is in charge of arrangements.
