I was saddened to hear of John's passing. I remember him from days of softball and baseball. He always had a smile on his face. He was one person that influenced me as to how to treat a person of a different color. You didn't treat them any different than anyone else and he treated you the same way. He was a wonderful man. I always looked forward to seeing him at the bowling alley. He was so easy to talk to. He just loved people. I know that you will all miss him dearly. My prayer are with you at this time of saddness.

Dear Jay, Rosemary and Family, I was saddened to hear of John's passing. I have such fond memories of John from my years growing up in Iola. From him behind the plate, umpiring little league, to Saturday mornings at Country Lanes and the great time he, Kyle McCammon and I had attending the NAIA tournament in KC. I know he will be missed by so many. May you feel God's embrace during this difficult time. Clay

My thoughts and prayers to the Bass family. John was always such a nice man to visit with. I came to Iola as an adult, therefore I didn't know about his involvement with the youth actitivites of Iola. I just knew he was a respected man of the community and now I know more of his story. 8May his legacy live on.

My heart sank when I heard of John's death. I have known him almost my entire life. As a child, he was the reason I loved Saturday bowling from the time I was able to pick up a ball! The positive encouragement he gave with his coaching ability!I don't think he ever met a stranger! Such a wonderful man! I, as well as many others in the Iola area, have special memories we hold dear in our hearts. John, May you rest in peace as your family fights to understand why you had to leave them. My condolence to the family...

John and his brother were mainstays when I got my first job, keeping score and announcing PeeWee and Little League games at Basset. I think they fought racism simply by being men of integrity and made Iola a better place.

No other person outside my immediate family has influenced me in such a profoundly positive manner as did John. Like another father, John was my mentor and my friend.

I have a lot of fond memories of John umpiring behind home plate during the late 50's. I was a catcher and if there was a questionable call he would lift up his mask and spit. That is when you knew the call would not be changed and that he had made the right call? My thoughts and prayers are with all his family. He will be missed! Warren
